8 Tips to Prepare for the New ICF Exam
First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on making it this far! If you’re reading this, you’ve already completed over 500 hours of coaching—what an incredible achievement! Now, you're on the brink of earning your ICF credential, whether that’s the ACC, PCC, or MCC. This next step is an exciting milestone, and I’m here to help you navigate the process with confidence.
Having recently gone through the ICF exam myself, I know how it can feel a bit daunting. The exam has changed, and with the new format introduced in 2023, it’s important to be well-prepared since now it’s more challening than the CKA I took for my ACC credential. In this article, I’ll share some essential tips to help you gear up for success, drawing from my own experience and a wealth of resources I gathered along the way.
Understanding the New ICF Exam Format
Let’s kick things off by understanding what to expect. Once you’ve submitted your application and received your invitation to schedule your exam, you’ll have 60 days to take it. The exam itself consists of 78 scenarios, organized into two sections, which breaks down like this:
Exam Instructions: 4 minutes
Section 1: 39 scenarios, 83 minutes
Scheduled Break: 10 minutes
Section 2: 39 scenarios, 83 minutes
It is a computer-based multiple-choice test that assesses how well you understand coaching according to the ICF's definition, the eight ICF core competencies, and the ICF Code of Ethics. The exam consists of 81 coaching scenarios, followed by four response options. Your task is to choose the best and worst actions for each scenario. You will have three hours to complete the exam (four hours if you use language aids), and there's a short break in the middle. To pass, you need a score of at least 460, with the possible range being 200 to 600 (Source: ICF)
Where to Take the Exam
Pearson VUE administers the exam, and you have the option to take it at a test center or online with a proctor. In y case, I decided to do it from home with a procter since I was more familiar with the surroundings. Other people prefer a Pearson VUE center. It tends to be a more straightforward experience. If you choose the online route, make sure you have a quiet, private space, and be prepared to keep things silent throughout the exam. I recommend watching videos from people sharing their experiences at a Pearson VUE center to know what to expect.
